Panic and anxiety gripped the offices of the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Monday, after 8 key witnesses said they will not testify on the case connecting President–elect Uhuru Kenyatta with 2007-08 post election violence.
Credible sources from the ICC said the 8 witnesses said they have forgotten what they had earlier told the court and they were not ready to testify against their President.
The Court’s Prosecutions had a rough time trying to convince the witnesses to agree to testify but majority said they were not ready to testify in July.
ICC Chief Prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda also pleaded with the witnesses assuring them of the Court’s protection but the witnesses who are currently holed up in major European Capitals refused the ICC deal saying they want to return to Kenya to build the country.
This new development is a major blow to ICC prosecution team, since many witnesses said they were coached and paid when they earlier testified against president-elect Uhuru Kenyatta.
President–elect Uhuru, his Deputy William Ruto and radio presenter Joshua Sang are facing charges at the ICC and their trials begin soon.
Uhuru’s co-accused ambassador Francis Muthaura was acquitted on Monday by the ICC court, and this may further weaken Uhuru’s case since they were accused together.
