Ugandan sentenced to 5 years in jail for getting pregnant in Kuwait

A Ugandan woman named Nambi Fatumah has been sentenced to 5 years in prison together with her baby in Kuwait for getting pregnant outside marriage.

According to the chairperson of the Association of Ugandans living in Asian and Arab countries, Ali Nusbuga, Fatumah was produced to court a few months ago and would have been saved from the verdict had the government and Human Rights bodies intervened.

He said that much it breaks the law in Kuwait for a woman that is not married to get pregnant or to have a baby and under such instances, the offenders, regardless of nationality or religion, face jail, not alot of help has been offered by the Ugandan authorities despite the endless calls for intervention.

Nsubuga calls upon the government use it’s diplomatic ties with Kuwait so as to save Fatumah and have her deported or even have her sentence reduced.

He also decried the little help and protection given to Ugandans abroad and said that many Ugandan who leave the country for greener pastures go through alot and mentioned instances of them being exploited, having their visas confiscated.

Fatumah suffers the same fate another lady called Mastula did, both are now to serve cases in Kuwait.
