The city of Nairobi currently ranks 6th among African cities which are vulnerable to being infected with the coronavirus (COVID-19).
This new information arises from a spatial analysis by University of Southampton population experts. Kenya is now regarded as a high-risk country based on the number of flights to and from countries with confirmed cases.
The Chinese Embassy confirmed that more flights will arrive from Guangzhou, South China, which currently ranks 15th among highest-risk cities worldwide.
Guangzhou province had 1,347 confirmed cases, the second-highest after Hubei province which reported 65,000 cases. Kenya, despite the alarming statistics, allowed 239 passengers from Guangzhou to enter into the country using China Southern Airlines on Wednesday.
The government, through the Health Ministry, insisted that there is nothing to worry about as the country has the capacity to test and treat any cases detected in Kenya.
Health Cabinet Administrative Secretary Rashid Aman said that they have deployed extra health personnel at JKIA and put up an isolation facility at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) at all points of entry.
United Nations, however, has expressed concerns about the risk the coronavirus poses to African nations that are not well prepared to handle an outbreak.
President Kenyatta has been castigated for keeping mum in the issue as participants in the debate expressed their anger on the relevant authorities in government after failing to show determination to prevent the virus.
