Vybz Kartel Reveals How He Recorded Music from Prison

Dancehall artist Vybz Kartel has opened up about how he managed to record music while being incarcerated. Despite being imprisoned since 2011 on a murder charge, Adidja Azim Palmer, popularly known as Vybz Kartel or the “World Boss,” has continued to release music without missing a beat.

The ‘Underwater’ hitmaker revealed that he recorded his tracks using an iPhone and sometimes used unconventional methods, like creating a makeshift studio setup with a mattress. He explained, “It wasn’t really that hard because now technology made it easier; I used to record on the iPhone. On the bunk, they give you a mattress, so I used a mattress to create the banging like in the studio. I had the phone like 3 feet away from my face, and I wrapped the mattress around my head.”

In a previous interview with Billboard Magazine, Kartel shared his reluctance to discuss how he was producing music from behind bars. He delivered a cryptic response about the matter, saying, “Many people say yes! VYBZ IS RECORDING IN PRISON!! But where’s the proof? But this is Jamaica, where you don’t need proof to imprison someone. For the record, I’m not authorized to answer such ‘above pay grade’ questions, so I’ll say, ‘A tree fell in the forest, and no one was there to hear it.’”
